Heading Away This Summer? Don’t Forget the Kennel Cough Vaccine!

Planning your summer holidays? ☀️✈️ While you pack your bags and book your flights, don’t forget to plan ahead for your pet family member too!

In Dubai, summer often means boarding your dog in a kennel, daycare, or pet hotel. These places due to the sheer number of dogs together- no matter how clean- can be a hotspot for kennel cough, a contagious respiratory disease that spreads easily between dogs through the air in shared spaces.

What is Kennel Cough?

Kennel cough (also called canine infectious tracheobronchitis) is like a doggy cold or flu, caused by a mix of viruses and bacteria—including Bordetella bronchiseptica. It leads to a persistent, dry, hacking cough and is highly contagious.

Dogs catch it through:

  • Shared air (coughing, sneezing)
  • Water bowls
  • Toys or bedding
  • Nose-to-nose greetings (common at the dog park, daycare & boarding!)

Signs to Watch For:

  • Persistent dry “honking” “whooping” cough
  • Sneezing or runny nose
  • Mild fever
  • Lethargy or low energy
  • Less interest in food

Most dogs recover well at home, but should be isolated from their friends for approximately 7days until their cough has completely disappeared. Puppies, seniors, and immune-compromised dogs are at risk of secondary complications such as dehydration or even pneumonia.

Prevention is Key—Especially Before Travel

Before checking your pet into a boarding facility or daycare:
Make sure their kennel cough vaccine is up to date
Ideally, vaccinate at least 7days before boarding
